This page is dedicated to my
dear friend and patch collecting "mentor", Chuck Kobel who passed away
on May 12th, 2008.
I first met Chuck in 1986 as a
rookie cop. I had just gotten into collecting German police patches. I was
introduced to him by a fellow officer who knew Chuck also collected German
patches. It began a friendship that spanned over twenty years.
Chuck was a devoted patch
collector who regularly attended the Mineola, NY patch show and a host of others
in Florida after he retired. If you attended any of these shows in the past
twenty years you probably ran into him.
When I think of how the hobby
used to be, Chuck is the person who comes to mind. He was a fair and honest
trader. I look back on how he took me under his wing and helped me out.
I've tried to pay that kindness back by treating new collectors the same way.
On a professional level, Chuck
was a "Cop's Cop". A highly decorated veteran, he was awarded the
department Medal of Valor in 1980. He served in the legendary NYPD Tactical
Patrol Force and later went on to serve in the departments Mounted Unit.
An injury sustained while in the Mounted Unit ultimately led to his line of duty
retirement. He epitomized the department motto "Fidelis Ad Mortem"
Chuck was also a veteran,
having proudly served in his beloved Marine Corps. Semper Fi, My
Friend.
